Signs You Need to Replace Your Boiler

A boiler that stops working can be one of the worst things to happen in winter, impacting both your comfort and wellbeing. In this blog, we will go through some of the signs that your boiler needs replacing.

Leaks and Water Pressure Issues

One of the most obvious signs that your boiler might need replacing is if the pipes start leaking or dripping. Sometimes these issues can come from damaged seals or O-rings, but they can also indicate internal component problems. If leaks are left unchecked, they can cause electrical shorts and even structural damage to your property.

Also, low water pressure, shown by a pressure gauge reading of below 1, can signal underlying problems that may make replacement cheaper than ongoing repairs. Some boiler repairs may need the replacement of copper pipe and copper pipe fittings.

Worrying Sounds and Smells

Some noises from your boiler are normal, but new or unusually loud sounds should be a concern. Kettling, banging or gurgling noises, especially when accompanied by vibration, can often indicate serious issues that may show that your boiler needs replacing.

Even more worrying are unusual smells like a sulphurous odour that could indicate a gas leak. Carbon monoxide leaks are odourless, but they can be detected if you have a yellow flame instead of a blue one, soot deposits or if you find that you are experiencing unexplained headaches and nausea.

Age and Efficiency Concerns

If your boiler is over ten years old and G-rated for efficiency, you’re probably wasting money on higher energy bills. A-rated condensing boilers use at least 90% of their energy effectively. Also, if replacement parts for your current boiler are becoming difficult to find or expensive, this can mean that it’s time for an upgrade.

Capacity and Performance

If your hot water needs have changed over time due to your family growing or home improvements, it might be time to upgrade your boiler. You may need a boiler with a separate cylinder or a combi boiler to meet your needs.
