Aluminium is a natural occurring chemical substance with the atomic symbol Al, and atomic number 13. Aluminium has a low density greater than those of many other precious metals, at about one-third that of silver. It also has an extremely high affinity for oxygen, forming a protective layer on the surface of any metal when subjected to the air.
In addition, aluminium is very resistant to corrosion, rusting, denting, buffing and scratching, as well as strengthening the abilities of certain polymers to resist stress and vibration. Some of the common uses of aluminium are in aeroplane components, in mechanical parts used in construction, and also in furniture. As one of the lightest materials, aluminium is often used as the main component of roofing and cabinetry, due to its lightweight.
Aluminium is strong, ductile, rigid and versatile, but is brittle, with the possibility of internal flaking and breakage. This property is one of the reasons why aluminium is widely used in reinforced concrete forms. Additionally, it is used in building insulation, in tank bodies, and in some missile bodies. It can be shaped using Tapping Machines like the ones from Cotswold Machinery Sales.
Aluminium has many excellent characteristics, such as: resistance to corrosion, strength, ductility, ability to duralulate, low density, homogenous (has no distinct crystalline or powdery formations), excellent thermal conductivity, superior fatigue strength, ability to be formed into thin sheets, good resistance to mechanical stress, resistance to erosion, ability to expand and contract, low toxicity, insect and fungal attack, easy availability (can be manufactured in a wide range of sizes and quantities), economical production cost, and ability to meet international standards.
