The beautiful county of Berkshire is home to many famous English landmarks – from Windsor Castle to Ascot Racecourse. Of course, these towns are also busy and thriving places which are enjoyable to visit – from businesses like these Ascot solicitors Parachute Law, to fantastic restaurants, there is plenty going on.
But Berkshire is also a county that has a lot of beautiful wild scenery, and many people use the towns of Berkshire as a base from which to explore the countryside. If you are keen to head to the area yourself, here are some of the best places to enjoy the great outdoors and some lovely walks or even a bike ride, in Berkshire…
Bracknell Forest – There are lots of beautiful walking trails in Bracknell Forest. You can do circular walks that also take in the tiny villages dotted around the forest such as Winkfield, which is a good place to also stop and explore and get something to eat and drink. You can also discover the home of the poet Alexander Pope on one of the walking trails around the forest, so for keen poetry lovers, this is another great reason to visit.
The Thames – The river Thames runs through the county of Berkshire and following the path along the river from Windsor is a truly beautiful walk. Starting off, you will be able to see the glorious Windsor castle. From there you can follow the river along, which as well as beautiful scenery also has many important historical sights to see along the way, such as the JFK memorial.
River Wey – If you want something a bit more off the beaten track, then this is the perfect peaceful riverside walk for you. Wander along this beautiful and picturesque river, where you will be able to spot narrow boats gently drifting along, and feel the peace and quiet of the river bank. It used to be a route for barges in the Victorian days but is now only used for pleasure. You will be able to wander past the original locks that were built when the river was first used and spot wildlife along the river edges. On a nice day, this is a great place to visit with a picnic.
Virginia Water – This beautiful place has been a place where even royalty enjoyed a picnic – it was one of Queen Victoria’s favourite places and it is easy to see why. The spectacular jewel in the crown are the beautiful waterfalls, but you will also see a large totem pole that was a gift to the Queen! From here you can also walk to the Windsor Great Park, where you can have a stroll and see if you can see any of the deer that are roaming free in the park.
