How to clean a burned oven tray

Oven trays are a hard-working part of a chef’s toolkit, and it is easy for the grease and grime to get burned in. However, this does not mean they are ruined. Instead, consider some effective ways to get them squeaky clean once again.

Check what it’s made from

Before proceeding, be aware that not all methods are suitable for all types of ovenable trays. You may be using one that is cast iron or has a non-stick coating or board trays like those at https://www.southerncrosspackaging.com/ovenable-trays. So, choose the method that is most suitable.

Hot water and 2p

A simple method involves soaking a tray in hot, soapy water for half an hour, then using the 2p coin to scrub it in a circular motion before rinsing. Avoid using this method with non-stick pans, as it can damage them.

DIY cleaner

There are many commercial cleaners for oven trays, but you can also make your own with simple, store-cupboard ingredients. Mix half a cup of white vinegar with half a cup of baking soda. Add to hot water and leave the oven tray to soak for forty minutes, before scrubbing with a non-scratch scouring pad.

Washing liquid

Ordinary washing-up liquid is effective on burnt-on grease. Remove as much as possible with a paper towel before soaking the tray in hot, soapy water. To make sure the washing liquid is cutting through the grease, look for grease bubbles forming in the water. This can take forty minutes or longer. Finish by wiping with a scratch-free sponge or putting it in the dishwasher.
