How Steering Parts Wear Over Time

All the steering parts wear gradually. The early signs of wear and tear can go unnoticed until the problem is too late to repair cost effectively.

Tie Rod Ends

Tie Rod Ends (TEs) connect the Rack-and-Pinion to the wheel hub. They are subjected to continuous operation and absorb constant road shock and vibration. As the rubber boot deteriorates, splits and cracks and the internal ball begins to wear loose. Listen for a knock or rattle over bumps or when turning sharply. Also look for Vague Steering (as if through mud).

Rack-and-Pinion Seals

Rack-and-Pinion Seals – Over the years the seals within the steering rack may deteriorate due to heat cycles. The rubber in the seal will harden and shrink over time which can cause slow leaks of the hydraulic fluid within the rack. A leak can manifest itself as a damp patch along the rack or could result in increased steering effort over time.

Steering Column Universal Joints

Steering Column Universal Joints (UJs) are designed to flex and permit the numerous changes in direction whilst steering. Repetitive use over time can cause UJs to ‘dry run’. This is often due to lack of lubrication. Notchy or stiff feeling spots through the steering can develop as a result of wear. A slight click or resistance at a particular point through the turn is a typical symptom of worn UJs.

Power Steering Pump Bearings

The pump is constantly running whilst the engine is running and the internal bearings of the pump are subject to constant heat and loading. A worn bearing can produce a whine or grinding noise that is often described as groaning and can change in pitch as engine speed is increased. Steering noise is highlighted in safe driving checks by road safety experts as a check that should be carried out as soon as a problem is identified. Early investigation is key to prevent expensive repairs for wear that could have been sorted earlier for the cost of replacement parts.

Steering Linkage Ball Joints

Ball joints are used in various points of the steering linkage and are prone to wear as they are constantly exposed to road grime and water. In many cases, the grease will dry out and the joint will start to wear allowing movement where there should be none. This can result in a clunking sound or even wandering while braking.
